Shock! Shopify’s 2025 Updates Just Blew Our Minds
Brace yourself – Shopify’s Winter ‘25 Edition unleashed 150+ updates across the platform. It may be nicknamed “The Boring Edition” but it’s anything but dull. Shopify is “smoothing out the rough edges” of commerce, and merchants are in for a wild ride. For example, product bundles get a massive boost: new reporting tools give deep insights, bundles are now visualized more intuitively, and if you use Shopify’s Bundles app you can even publish those bundles directly to POS. (Ecommerce stats back this up – a whopping 86% of merchants say bundles increase average order value.)
Subscriptions also got love: Shopify Subscriptions now checks your inventory before renewing (so you won’t oversell) and even supports Buy X, Get Y deals on recurring orders. The discount engine got sweeter too – Shopify tripled the limit of automatic discounts from 5 to 25 per store.
Highlights

App & Partner Rules Shake-Up
Shopify also shook up its partner ecosystem. The Shopify Partner Program now has two tracks – Service and Technology – each with tiered levels and clear performance requirements. Agencies and app developers will get rewards for hitting higher tiers (and merchants will more easily find top-notch partners).
The Built for Shopify (BFS) badge got a makeover too. Shopify raised the bar for app quality. All BFS apps must meet stricter criteria by July 2025 or risk losing their badge. Requirements include using the latest App Bridge and new category-specific requirements.
- Tiered partner program: Split into Service vs. Technology tracks with multiple tiers.
- BFS rules tighten: All BFS apps must comply with updated standards by July 2025.
- New BFS perks: BFS apps get special marketing tools, plan-based ad targeting, and a BFS-only search filter.
Checkout, Payments & Compliance Overhaul
On the payments and checkout side, Shopify added plenty of new rules to keep you compliant and customers happy.
- Mexico: Starting Jan 2025, all orders shipping to Mexico must collect the customer’s tax ID in checkout.
- VAT changes: VAT reverse-charge rules now apply to both the UK and EU.
- Canada: Shopify automatically handles Canada’s temporary GST/HST tax break, and shipping taxes are calculated proportionally.
- Checkout limits: Merchants can now set add-to-cart limits to protect inventory.
- POS: Shopify POS 10 introduces offline payments and expanded Tap-to-Pay on iPhone/Android.
- Scripts: Extended migration deadline for Scripts to Functions to June 30, 2026.
- Shipping: Shopify Shipping added more carriers and options, and Checkout Blocks is now part of the Apps area.
Merchandising & Marketing Bonanza
Shopify’s 2025 tweaks also bring marketing and merchandising upgrades.
- Smart storefront: Customize category filters and extend with custom category metafields.
- Shop integration: Store filters now sync to the Shop app; customers can initiate returns in-app.
- Marketing tools: Flow now supports marketing triggers; automate loyalty emails after exchanges.
- AI & dashboards: The new Sidekick AI assistant can help write copy, and revamped analytics give faster, deeper insights.
